Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Some are calling it a breath-taking leap forward. North Dakota voters elected the state's first openly gay legislator.

He's Democrat Josh Boschee, from North Fargo, who was elected as a representative in the state's house.

Boschee says this election is a game-changer for same sex couples for three reasons: First, the re-election of a president who supports marriage equality. Second, the election of the first lesbian senator. And third, the results on four ballot measures that worked out well for same-sex couples.

St. Rep. Elect Joshua Boschee: "America, especially North Dakotans want to move on and focus on issues that are important to them."

Voters made it loud and clear. Joshua Boschee was the top vote-getter, elected as the state representative from District 44.

It's no secret. Boschee says he'll fight for non-discrimination policies.

Boschee: "We're one of 21 states still where that is not the case, where people can be fired from their job, or kicked out of their apartment, and that's just not right.”

His main priorities align with most North Fargo voters. They want property tax relief, equitable funding for NDSU, and a focus on early childhood education.

All issues he is setting out to tackle. And as an added bonus? He wants to be a role model for LGBT children across the state.

Boschee: "When I think of kids in rural parts of North Dakota, and other parts where it may not be as safe as comfortable to be out, that they can have someone speaking for them and with them, telling their experiences at the state capital.”

Boschee says he'll report to Bismarck on January 7th, working a grueling 80 days to bring North Dakota closer to progress, fairness, and equality.
