Bismarck, ND (WDAY TV) - What a whirl-wind 24-hours it has been for both Heitkamp and Berg supporters.

It turned into waiting and worrying for hours, with both sides waiting for election protocol to play out.

After waiting hours, those Heitkamp supporters who stayed long after midnight, welcomed the state's first woman U.S. Senator who was comfortable enough to greet those who believed in the upset, without making an all-out acceptance speech.

Heidi Heitkamp, (D) Senator Elect: “We said in the very beginning that this was going to be an election and not an auction, and guess what we had tonight - we had an election.”

It was a hand wringing, heart stopping evening, as we got an exclusive look inside the private moments of election night. Heitkamp and her immediate family watching the numbers scroll and stroll slowly by.

Heitkamp: “We always knew this was going to be close, we hoped a little less close.””

But as morning came, the apparent new senator seized the moment, and in a priceless election night photo, an 82 year old mother spent the night with a daughter now headed to DC.

Heitkamp is coming to the Fargo Teamsters tomorrow morning to talk to supporters.
