Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- One big issue drawing Minnesotans to the polls is a proposed constitutional amendment which would define marriage as between one man and one woman, effectively prohibiting same sex marriage.

Supporters say it's needed to protect children. But some students at Concordia in Moorhead spent part of the day asking others to vote NO.

A former Concordia student and spokesman for Minnesotans United for All Families says regardless of how it turns out, he's proud of the campaign.

Chris Stinson/Minnesotans United for all Families: "hundreds of thousands of conversations, tens of thousands of people have thought more deeply about why the quality of life for LGBT people is important for them, and those folks are going to be showing up to vote no...and whether that's enough to defeat the amendment or not, I know that we've changed the state for the better."

Shawn Erickson/St. Joseph's Church Adult Faith Coordinator: "we know, it's a fact, that the best union for children is a marriage of one man and one woman."

State law already forbids same sex marriage, but amendment supporters say putting it in the constitution would make it tougher to overturn.
