Bismarck, ND (WDAY TV) -- Many of us live in one of 17 states which does not have the death penalty, after 2 recent executions in South Dakota we asked state lawmakers if North Dakota's stance would ever change?

State Representative Larry Klemin says he doesn't see the state going back to it.

Klemin says, "First of all there's a lot of churches and faith organizations that are against the death penalty, also having the death penalty increases the cost than sentencing to prison for life without parole."

Right now more than 32-hundred prisoners are on death row, that includes Alfonso Rodriguez Junior. Rodriguez was a part of the first federal death sentence handed down in North Dakota.

He'll be put to death in South Dakota. A date is not yet set.
