Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- The tight race for U.S. Senate in North Dakota lures another political star to the state. Rick Berg is getting support from the man who ran for the White House four years ago, Senator John McCain.

The name "McCain" gets peoples attention and that's just what Berg wants and needs. Voters in this state picked Mccain over Barack Obama by nearly a 10 percent margin in the 2008 White House race.

Berg is hoping Mccain's clout will translate into a win for him next week.

Mccain was greeted by loud cheers during a rally for Berg at Playmakers in Grand Forks.

He commended both Representative Berg and Senator John Hoeven for their hard work in congress. And he urged those in attendance to make Berg the state's next United States senator.

Senator John McCain says, "Republicans cannot take the majority in the United States Senate without electing Rick Berg to the United States Senate, and that's the way it is."

McCain is the 2nd political superstar to visit North Dakota this week. On Monday, Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp got a big push when former President Bill Clinton visited Fargo.
