Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The city of Fargo wants to acquire a downtown Fargo hotel to make way for permanent flood protection.

City commissioners met this morning to discuss the latest projects, including making a dike protecting Fargo city hall, permanent.

It would involve acquiring the Howard Johnson Inn Downtown on Third Street and Third Avenue.

The estimated cost: nearly 24-million dollars, with hopes the federal government would cover 75 percent.

Pat Zavoral, Fargo City Administrator: “Corps of engineer projects take on average, 13 to 15 years. Could we be in that muddled mess for that long? I hope not. I think what we're trying to do is accelerate our in town activities as quickly as we can."

City engineers say the permanent flood protection will eventually be needed as part of the red river diversion.
