Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - It's a fun night but also the deadliest night of the year for young pedestrians.

As Fargo families send out their trick-or-treaters, police have a word of caution for parents and drivers.

It is a beautiful night for trick-or-treating.

But as the sun begins to set, drivers and parents should be on the lookout to keep little ghouls and goblins safe.

Fargo Police are urging people to drive defensively, as pedestrian traffic is much higher tonight.

Children excited about the holiday may run into the street, or they may not see a car if their vision is obstructed by a mask.

But parents especially need to make sure their children are safe by directly supervising them on their candy routes.

Lt. Joel Vettel, Fargo Police Department: “Dropping them off in a neighborhood and then coming back to pick them up a half-hour to an hour later in most cases is not acceptable behavior.

Shannon Kinsella, Fargo Resident: “We go with them. We talk about going across the street and making sure to wait for us. Then, we've got little glow-in-the-dark things that they wear around their necks.”

Police say they have additional officers out tonight to make sure everything goes smoothly.
