Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- If you think you've seen a lot of apartments going up in Moorhead, your right. The city has more rental units in the works or under construction than anyone can remember.
One apartment building is nearly done and another is just getting underway here on 40th avenue south. Another 2 buildings will soon be started here as well. This brings to over 200 rental units under construction or in the plans. A number that is something new for Moorhead.
Considering our statistics have always been more slanted towards owner occupied home ownership, we didn't have the number of rental units the community across the river had.
The Rental market in the F-M area is fairly tight right now according to housing experts and that is especially true in Moorhead.
Mike Redlinger/Moorhead City Manager: "We've seen a lot of demand for people to be in Moorhead, so for our college students, for some of our seniors that are looking to stay in the community after selling a home this is going to really fill that niche and fill that void."
Over the next 2 years the city of Moorhead hopes to extend 20th street all the way down to 40th avenue to where the new apartments are going up. They think that will make it more attractive for students as it will give them a direct route to both M state and MSUM.
Moorhead Mayor Mark Voxland said that he can't remember this many rentals going up in over 25 years.
