Radio personality Garrison Keillor shows support for Heitkamp

Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- He's best know for reporting the news from Lake Wobegon, Minnesota, on Prairie Home Companion.

But today, N.P.R. Radio personality Garrison Keillor was in Grand Forks to show his support of U.S. Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp.

Heidi Heitkamp / US Senate Candidate: "I want all of us to give him a very warm North Dakota, very hot dish welcome."

That is the theme dish here for the folksy celebrity Garrison Keillor's visit to Grand Forks.

Kellior: "I have seen hot dish here that I have never seen in Minnesota."

Keillor is here to add some spice to Democrat Heitkamp's campaign. There is a little more then a week to go in the close election with her opponent Republican Rick Berg.

Keillor: "I met her and I was really impressed by her. She is a good strong, good hearted women that should be in the US senate."

Heitkamp: "He hasn't done it before for a North Dakota candidate, we met recently personally and hit it off pretty well."

Kellior is no stranger to politics, he says his first campaign work was for John Kennedy in 1960.

Kellior: "So I have been a democrat ever since, My father was a republican I figured you know this would be a way to get his attention."

Judging by the size of today's crowd, Kellior had everyone's attention here. Heitkamp says she hopes his visit will motivate people to get to the polls on Novemeber 6th.

Heitkamp: "In the end what this race is going to be determined by is who gets out and votes."

Heitkamp plans to continue her campaign tomorrow in the Western part of the state.

Rick Berg is kicking off his own statewide tour tonight from his hometown of Hettinger.
