Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, one-third of the adult homeless population is made up of veterans.

And although those numbers are going down, locally they are on the rise. Area homeless shelters are seeing more veterans walking through the doors in need of help, in part because of the oil boom out West.

Some say they came here looking for work and either weren't qualified, or the pay wasn't what they expected.

Brenda Bergsrud, with the ND Dept of Veterans Affairs, says, "They want permanent housing and that's what's nice about some of the grant program that's through the Salvation Army and is that they are able to help with some of the rent assistance, the deposit to get an apartment."
