Hawley, MN (WDAY TV) - The father of a former NFL Quarterback stopped in Hawley today to talk parenting.
Mac Bledsoe, father of Drew Bledsoe, met with parents tonight to talk about parenting with dignity.
As the father of NFL player, a former teacher and coach, Mac Bledsoe has plenty of stories to share about giving guidance to children.
Now an author and speaker, he has met with parents, students, and teachers in all fifty states now, in Hawley, Minnesota.
Mac and his wife Barbara, both longtime teachers, are the parents of NFL Quarterback Drew Bledsoe, best known for his time playing with the New England Patriots. They've gone from teaching in the classroom to teaching on the road.
Their message: Parenting with Dignity
Mac Bledsoe, Parenting with Dignity: “Not necessarily because the little buggers are acting respectable nor dignified, they're throwing a fit at the entrance of the grocery store. We're gonna do it because we choose to be dignified.”
Mac and Barbara have spoken to parents and teachers across the country for 20 years. And it was having a famous son that helped them get their message out.
Bledsoe: “In his very first year in the NFL, he said, "mom and Dad, I think this spotlight of the NFL gives us a unique opportunity."
They came up with a curriculum designed to help parents create encouraging and loving relationships with their children.
Things like criticizing the performance and not the person, and sending a constant message of love.
And Mac also had an important message for Hawley students.
Hitting on topics like dreams, respect, and substance abuse.
Kim Ulvent, Teacher: “It's tough for kids to grow up, and I think as long as they know that teachers and parents are there for them, hopefully it will stress positive influence.”
Besides speaking to parents in Hawley tonight, Bledsoe also stopped at the Ulen-Hitterdal school.
