Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- A surprise and well-deserved honor for a North Dakota soldier who lost his leg in Iraq in Grand Forks today.
Phil Sorenson thought he was just going to Cabela's to thank some people who helped organize his hunting trip.
But when he got there, Firefighters, the VFW, National Guard, Air Force Base, and more than 300 people from the valley, were lining the entrance to thank him for his service.
The store footed the 500-dollar bill for Sorenson to get whatever he wanted for his hunting trip next week.
Sarah Prout with Cabela's says, "It's so encouraging to see the community's support come out and just rally behind Phil, someone they've never met before."
Brad Bixby, who drove Sorenson to Cavela's, says, "He appreciates all of them and respects all of them more than he respects himself."
Sorenson is originally from Williston and served one 8-month tour in Iraq back in 2004.
