Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The Flood Diversion Authority has added a feature that they say will reduce the number of buyouts for the project.

Local engineering firms have developed preliminary designs for adjustable gates on the diversion inlet channel.

The gates would allow more flow through the cities. They say that will reduce the impact to upstream areas like Richland and Wilkin counties.

Keith Berndt, County Administrator: “During a 100 year flood, the project would be operated in such a way that it would allow about a 35-foot flood to go through Fargo which, we think with some enhancements to the levee systems in Fargo, would be manageable.”

The authority also heard details of a 12-foot ring dike proposal to protect Oxbow, Hickson, and Bakke.
