Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- Male and female students at MSUM may soon be sharing a bathroom.
A dorm renovation proposal for West Snarr wants to bring the very first co-ed bathrooms to campus. Right now West Snarr is home to about 100 students, and in two years may also be home to co-ed bathrooms.
Seth: "Really all you have to have is an open mind and open personality. i used to do it."
The school has plans to renovate the old dorm that hasn't seen updates since 1962. The new layout includes coed bathrooms on each floor, but instead of stalls they will have full walls and doors with locks.
Separate rooms for each toilet and shower, then a common area for sinks.
Heather: "One of the things students told us was more privacy in bathrooms. One of the ways to accomplish that, is compartment style bathrooms."
But instead of increasing privacy, some students believe it will make it worse.
Molly: "A bathroom is a private place, and it would be more uncomfortable."
Seth: "For girls i can see that. Boys, really, we're open to it. For us, it's normal."
So if they don't like the idea, they can choose to live somewhere else.
Heather: "It's to provide another option, that's different that we currently have in our other hall."
If the school approves the money for the renovation, the project, Co-ed bathrooms included, is set to begin at the end of this school year.
The project would make MSUM the only school in the area with co-ed bathrooms.
