Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Local law enforcement will be cracking down on seatbelt use, drinking and driving and safe speeds, thanks to a federal grant.

The $800,000 dollar grant will be used over the next year, in Northwest Minnesota.

The commissioner of Public safety says traffic deaths are spiking. In the last decade, 159 people have been killed on area roads because they were buckled up.

And, 133 people have been killed because of drunk drivers.

Donna Berger, DPS Office of Traffic Safety: “They work with local youth, teens, educating the importance belting and driving safely, and child passenger safety, there's a lot of initiatives that go toward traffic safety, but a lot of it goes to overtime enforcement.”

The grant will be shared by law enforcement, public safety groups and for educational purposes.
