CASSELTON, N.D. - Authorities have identified the 69-year-old man killed here Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a train.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol reported Sunday that Casselton resident Eugene Kaatz was killed in the accident at 4:09 p.m. Saturday.
An eyewitness told authorities Kaatz was walking southbound on the north side of the tracks that run across state Highway 18, or Langer Avenue in Casselton.
After a westbound train cleared the intersection, Kaatz began to cross the tracks while the arms were still down and couldn’t get out of the way in time to avoid getting hit by an eastbound train on a parallel set of tracks.
Kaatz was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.
