Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Even with the nice warm-up, it's a long, cold night for people who spent 30 hours experiencing what it's like to be homeless.

More than 500 people took part in homeless and hungry. They went without meals, slept outside in cardboard boxes, and did service projects.

After 30 hours, the volunteers were free to go home. One-thousand people on a given night in the metro area don't have that opportunity.

Abbi Settel, a "Homeless" volunteer, says, "it has to be pretty tough. So, yeah it makes you more understanding of how their everyday life is, because that would be really hard. Especially up North, here."

Camilla Herbel, another "Homeless" volunteer, says, "it's made me more understanding for how they feel... Respect it a little bit more.. Not so judgmental."

Homeless and Hungry started Saturday at noon and ended at 6:30 tonight.
