Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- A Cass County inmate is back in jail tonight after briefly escaping custody this morning. It sent several Fargo schools into lockdown.

25-year-old Francisco Ayala is jailed on felony drug charges. He now faces additional charges from his escape attempt.

Francisco Ayala was coming from a court appearance when he broke away from the deputy who was escorting him to the vehicle. He then took off into a nearby neighborhood.

Sheriff's deputies and Fargo police surrounded the area, and zeroed in on an apartment.

They say Ayala knew the people who live there. They found him inside with the door kicked in.

Less than an hour after his escape, Ayala was back in custody.

Cass County is hoping to prevent future incidents like this. In just a few weeks, a new, secure addition to the courthouse will bring vehicles coming from the jail inside the building before inmates are escorted out.

Paul Laney/Cass County Sheriff: "This is why we wanted the new Courthouse addition, stuff like this won't happen anymore. But he's back in jail where he belongs."

Five nearby schools were on lockdown during the search.

The Sheriff's office says they are investigating just how Ayala was able to escape and get out of his shackles.
