Fairmount, ND (WDAY TV) -- The Richland County Sheriff's Department is trying to find out what led to a suicide attempt at the Fairmount School.

The teenager was freshman student Gage Biel. Authorities say they're still not sure why he shot himself Thursday morning in front of his 9th grade classmates.

They did confirm that he handed a note to someone in the class beforehand, but would not say what this note included.

Although the student did bring the small handgun to school, law enforcement says he will most likely not receive legal consequences.

Richland Beto, Richland Co. Investigator, says, "there can be some sanctions through the school and that will be up to the school to address those. As far as the criminal side of things, that will be up to our state's attorney's office and we have spoken with the state's attorney and at this point he has indicated he is not going to pursue charges."
