Fairmount, ND (WDAY TV) -- The student never lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital in Breckenridge for treatment.

His classmates and teachers say he was a good student and are shocked he tried to take his own life.

Earlier this morning, students, parents, and teachers were still outside of Fairmount School, deeply saddened by this rare tragedy.

Chase DeVine/Fairmount Junior: "It was just struck, i mean nobody knew what to do."

The school of only 112 students is very close knit, with only 8 in the freshman class.

It was in front of those fellow freshmen that the boy tried to kill himself.

Ron Stahlecker/Fairmount Superintendent: "This kind of took us really by shock because everyone knows everybody and if there would've been any sign whatsoever I know some of his classmates would've said something."

DeVine: "Yesterday I was talking to him, he was laughing you know, he just looked fine, and just today snapped I guess."

One freshman inside the room at the time says the shooter handed a note to his ex girlfriend before walking up to the front of the room, sticking the handgun in his mouth, and pulling the trigger.

The classmate says there was no time to stop him, and describes the room as instant chaos filled with screaming, tears and uncertainty.

Another student in class right down the hall heard the cries.

DeVine: "There was multiple tears, at least 15 kids were crying. It's just, I was holding back. I guess I didn't know what to do."

A horrific scene students and staff never saw coming.

Stahlecker: "It was something that took everyone by surprise."

DeVine: He was kind of on the low. Every once in a while he'd be quite but otherwise he was a really fun guy to hang around, nice loving kid.

I also spoke with the boy's aunt who would not go on camera, but says this act came out of nowhere and he's now doing as well as he can. She said her nephew is usually very loving and always kind to others.

All classes were canceled for the day.
