Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - If you'll be headed out pheasant hunting this weekend, we have some good news.

Numbers are up, more than 50 percent from last year.

But before you get too excited - last year, numbers were down 40 percent.

North Dakota Game and Fish says the mild winter, plus dry conditions in the summer helped boost the population.

It says you may want to take advantage of the hunt this year, because the long-term outlook isn't good.

Doug Leier, ND Game & Fish: "The not so good news is that we continue to lose habitat. We are losing conservation, program acres, CRP acres continue to shrink up in North Dakota."

The season opens this Saturday, and goes until January.
