Woman jumps from 34th St. bridge in Moorhead onto I-94

Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- A gruesome and bizarre scene in Moorhead tonight. Police say a woman jumped from the 34th Street bridge, onto I-94 and was hit by at least 1 car.

She was dead when first responders got on scene. It's unknown if she died from the fall, or from impact by the vehicle. This happened about 8:15.

Police say she didn't have identification on her, all they know tonight is that she's an adult. State Patrol says the driver of the car was 25-year-old Benjamin Deraas, from Fargo.

Minutes before the call of the victim jumping off the bridge, someone reported seeing a woman running in and out of traffic on the 34th street overpass.

Sgt. Lonnie Wambach with the Minnesota State Patrol says, "in fact there was a deputy real close but didn't get here in time before she jumped."

Westbound traffic was detoured on exit 6, to a frontage road. Authorities will close that section of interstate sometime tomorrow to reconstruct the accident.
