Williston, ND (WDAY TV) -- It's extremely rare for North Dakota, and now experts are debating what caused an earthquake near Williston.

Some believe the magnitude 3.3 quake was naturally occurring. Saying its similar to the last 9 earthquakes detected in North Dakota, and 2 of those were before drilling here occurred.

Others point at wastewater injection from the oil field being the cause. The state has 390 wastewater wells, and there is one about 7 miles from that earthquake.

It happened on September 28th.
