Winter weather puts beet harvesting on hold

Sabin, MN (WDAY TV) -- Extreme temperature swings and winter weather across the Valley have delayed peak beet harvesting season.

Snow, low temperatures, and rain from earlier in the week stopped many American Crystal Sugar workers from bring in beets.

Moorhead's plant resumed harvests today and Hillsboro's is set to start again later this evening. But it could be as late as Monday for harvests up north to begin again.

Greg Richards, American Crystal Agronomy Manager, says, "we've got weather conditions and soil conditions right now that will allow us to keep things going. If we get into the mid 20's tonight we could see some frost issues or frozen beet issues so we may have to shut down again early morning."

Richards says weather next week looks good for harvests.
