Oxbow, ND (WDAY TV) -- Residents and local leaders weigh in on a new ring dike idea that could save the communities of Oxbow, Hickson, and Bakke.

The plan now being considered by the US Army Corps of Engineers would put a 10 to 17 foot dike around the three communities, saving about 180 homes. The ideas include one smaller ring or one larger that would also save Oxbow's golf course.

30 homes would still need buyouts or could move a short distance inside of the ring. Diversion Authority Chairman Darrel Vanyo says everything there now will be saved, but people living in the towns aren't yet convinced.

Darrell Vanyo, Diversion Authority Chairman, says, "We were always looking for ways that we might be able to save the communities of Oxbow, Bakke and Hickson."

Mike Bice, Knickerbocker Liquor Locker Owner says, "We've been told from day one that they can't have higher than a three foot ring dike, then all of a sudden a 10 to 17 foot one is possible. It seems they change the rules as they go."
