Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- It's the first time the Valley's seen snow this early in more than 25 years.

The last time fell on October 7th 1985, so still a few days later than this morning's precipitation. And on this date last year, the low was 61, marking a record high minimum for the region.

WDAY Storm tracker meteorologist Daryl Ritchison says especially this amount of snow, several inches in some northern areas, is extremely rare.

Daryl says, "it has happened before, but previous to 1985, you'd almost have to go back into the early 50's. The earliest snowfall in Fargo was back in 1912, so it's 100 years ago."

He says snow this early is most likely a fluke, not a sign of what's to come this winter season.
