Pelican Rapids, MN (WDAY TV) - A Pelican Rapids butcher has been forced to close up shop after a grease fire destroyed everything he's worked for.
Nearly a week after Heart O' Lakes Quality Meats went up in smoke, owner Jason Stetz is now picking up the pieces and trying to figure out how to move forward.
It had not even been a year since Stetz opened the doors to his new meat market in Pelican Rapids, but now all he's left with is what a fire didn't destroy.
Jason Stetz, Heart O’ Lakes Quality Meats Owner: “It was numb, seeing something you've worked for for so long.”
A blaze broke out last Thursday, and twice Jason and his team thought they had it under control
Stetz: “The third time, when it flared up, it caught the bacons on fire and it was like a diesel fire.”
Stetz first noticed the fire when he saw black smoke billowing out of the meat smoker that used to stand right here. Then fire crews showed up and spent about 45 minutes putting out the flames.
Kim Weishair, Customer: “I was very upset when this happened because of the fact that I love these people and I love their products.”
Luckily both made it out of the flames.
Stetz: “Nobody got hurt, that's the big thing, not even the seven pound hot dogs.”
And with help from the entire community, Stetz has turned this tragedy, into plans for a better tomorrow.
Weishair: “All I can say is I hope they come back. They have excellent, excellent meat. The bacon was absolutely fantastic.”
Stetz: “We're going to do everything in our power to rebuild. We owe it to the community and our employees to get this thing going because you know, things we're good.”
Stetz says the building and his equipment were total losses, but says he plans to rebuild in the same location and hopes insurance covers most of the costs.
