Williston grapples with oil boom by 'partnering'

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Williston Mayor Ward Koeser says the city is handling its growth problems by looking for help from anyone who will offer it.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Williston Mayor Ward Koeser says the city is handling its growth problems by looking for help from anyone who will offer it.

New housing and population studies predict Williston will double its population in the next dozen years.

Koeser says during an earlier boom in the early 1980s, the city took on a lot of obligations itself, and ended up loaded with debt.

Now Koeser says the city seeks partners in solving its problems with a lack of housing and the need to expand its public works system.

He says the partners range from oil companies to property developers to charitable groups and the state of North Dakota.

Koeser says Williston has been called the fastest-growing small city in the nation.
