(WDAY TV) -- The Richland county Sheriff's office is investigating a case where a man tried to get a 5th grade girl in his car. The girls mother is still in shock tonight, and the community is on the look out.

This morning Laurie Metzger's daughter was biking to school, when a man in a dark blue car pulled up and offered her a ride. Fortunately, her daughter knew exactly what to do in that situation.

But it's still raising concern in the community.

Laurie Metzger: "Kind of in shock, you don't expect this to happen in a small town."

Laurie Metzger's fifth grade daughter was about to arrive at the Wyndmere K-12 school on her bike, when a stranger pulled up and offered a ride.

The girl refused, and told an adult what had happened when she got to school.

Metzger relieved all of those talks about strangers struck with her daughter.

Metzger: "Thankful that she listened, thankful that she's ok."

Teachers at the school also spoke to the students about safety. Now, the community is on the lookout for the man, who is described as in his 70s with grey hair and a goatee.

People are being a little more cautious, including the young girl who was approached.

Metzger: "She was scared to ride her bike home, so I drove her in the van, and then followed her close behind."

It's proof here in Wyndmere that warning your kids can make a difference.

Metzger: "Say no, go to an adult, let them know what happened."

The Richland County Sheriff's office asks anyone with information about the man or the suspect vehicle to contact the office at the number on the screen.
