Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) -- On gravel roads and small town streets across Cass County, volunteers in cars and pickup trucks are demonstrating what "good neighbors" are all about.
A non-profit group called: "Community of Care" is doing what government programs cannot. Familiar faces lending a hand, allowing seniors to stay longer in their homes, and live independently.
85-year old Louise Flemmer still gets around pretty good, but recently she has turned to volunteers at a young non-profit in Cass County that brings her to doctor visits.
Louise: "If it wasn't for them, I could not stay here."
It is called Community of Care. Volunteers who spread out across the back roads and by ways of Cass County, helping 700 seniors this year alone Medicare, Insurance and Medical Forms. A social worker and most recently a nurse are on board to focus on needs, from medical to spiritual.
Myrna Hanson/Community of Care: "There is something about living in rural america we are keeping them in their homes, where they are surrounded by memories, their friends and churches and I think we are making an impact on rural communities."
Last year alone, 40 volunteers with community of care spent 700 hours driving 12 thousand miles picking up seniors for doctor appointments.
Louise: "Can't read or write because of arthritis, so Lucille helps me."
Volunteer Lucille Kingsley has been called on to help out Louise now and then.
Lucille Kingsley/Volunteer: "We get calls from family members asking if we can help out with loved ones, it fills a need as we age."
People living in all 2-dozen Cass County towns are eligible for the assistance. 400-private donors along with some grant money keep the program rolling. A chance for seniors to stay at home and leaning on their neighbors for help in those golden years.
And there is a big effort in Casselton and Arthur this weekend to help out "Community of Care."
It is the 1st Annual Classic Car and Motorcycle Cruise Fundraiser. It will be held at the Central Cass school starting at 8:30 am this Saturday. Lunch to follow at the Arthur School at 1:30.
