Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Police believe alcohol was a factor in the death of an NDSU student hit by a train over the weekend.

Police say 18-year-old Colby Anderson was walking crossing the tracks close to Dakota Drive and 18th Street South when he was hit early Sunday morning.

He was with three friends, walking across an unmarked part of the tracks. Anderson was a Fargo North High Grad, just starting his first semester at NDSU.

The school has brought in counselors to reach out to grieving students.

NDSU says for most first year students, it's not easy to reach their support system, since many are far from home.

It's put RAs on alert to keep in close contact with Colby's roommates and friends.

NDSU says students typically connect better with their peers than administrators.

The school says counselors and other resources are available.

There are many details about the case not yet released, but the school says if it has the chance, it'll turn this tragedy into a teaching tool.

Rian Nostrum, Dir. Of Res. Life: "Decide is there an opportunity for an educational piece here or is it more about being vigilant about safety as a general concept, knowing this is on the minds of our students.”

NDSU says from Day 1, students are reminded about the importance of keeping safety a top priority. It says from flyers, to pamphlets, to meetings, it urges students to make safe decisions.
