Glyndon, MN (WDAY TV) -- What a night for a local high school football player, who played his first and last Varsity Game tonight. D-G-F coaches put freshman Eric Watt on the team, after learning back surgery would prevent him from ever playing again.

Eric Watt said he was very nervous to play in the Varsity game against Breckenridge tonight. But the second he got out on the field it was clear that he was the star of the game.

For freshman Eric Watt, football is practically a way of life.

Watt: "I love football, I play it all the time with my family."

But soon, he will no longer be able to play the game he loves. Eric has scoliosis, and will soon have back surgery. They will place rods in his spine, which could cause him serious injury in a contact sport.

Watt: "I was sad when I found out that I'd never be able to play again."

But tonight, Eric is living out his dream of playing on the Varsity Football team.

(announcing him into the game.)

Coaches put him on the Varsity team for the night.

Kathy Watt/Mom: "It's bittersweet."

The game began, and the stands roared with support for Eric. Then, a few minutes into the game...THIS happened.

Eric scored his first Varsity touchdown.

(fans cheering!)

Though he won't be able to play anymore, there was no question that tonight Eric was the star of the team.

Eric: This will be a memory I will remember for a long time.

Eric will be able to finish out most of the football season on the ninth grade team. His surgery is in October.
