(WDAY TV) -- Our summer weather with little rain is welcoming algae into our area waterways.
Even in some spots along the Red River, people are noticing algae blooms. In some cases, blue-green algae can be lethal to humans and animals. Experts say a small amount can be deadly to dogs. And there is no cure.
Because of the summer heat and little rainfall, we have a lot of stagnant water around.
Even though Fargo gets water from the river, there are systems in place to get rid of any kind of organic material.
Ron Hendrickson, with the City of Fargo Water Dept. says, "it works by oxidation smaller compounds destroys them on algae notorious for."
The DNR says it is best if hunters keep their dogs out of any water that has a pea-soup appearance.
