Maris considered for Missouri Sports Hall of Fame

HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) — Roger Maris spent part of his early baseball career in Missouri, and the last part. That may be enough to get him into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) — Roger Maris spent part of his early baseball career in Missouri, and the last part. That may be enough to get him into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

Hannibal Courier-Post reporter Dominic Genetti has been advocating on Maris's behalf. The Courier-Post reports that Marty Willadsen of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame says Maris is being considered, and could be selected next year.

Maris began his career in Cleveland in 1957, then played two seasons for the Kansas City A's before being traded to the New York Yankees. His 61 homers in 1961 were a record that stood for 37 seasons.

Maris finished his career helping the St. Louis Cardinals to the 1967 World Series championship and the 1968 National League pennant. He died in 1985.
