Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Home makeovers have never been more popular. Spending on remodeling has topped new construction for the first time nationwide.
The FM Home Builders Association took that as a cue to start a new event - the Remodeled Home Tour.
Paul Jarvis and his wife Ann knew they wanted a home in North Fargo, but they weren't finding the home of their dreams.
Jarvis: "Many of North side Fargo homes are quite old, so they need a ton of rehab work. So, it was a home in our price range, and the layout was perfect, so we decided to do a lot of the work ourselves."
Their route is not uncommon. More people are opting for remodeling over building new than ever before.
Shawn Rud: "A lot of people love where they live, and they don't wanna build, they don't wanna move. So, it gives you that option of staying in the school district, getting that fresh new look, and working with the space that you have."
Remodeling can give a home an updated feeling, and keeps the resale value up. To reflect the remodeling trend, this year the Parade of Homes also offered tours of remodeled homes. It was a chance for people to get ideas and inspiration for their own projects.
Amanda McInnes: "Now they can come in their own neighborhoods and see, "I have a house from the 50s, just like this one!" "I have an old house from the 70s I don't know what to do with, just like this one!" So, it's really great to have people be able to see what they can do with what they have."
Now, a new kitchen, carpets, and several closets later... the Jarvis's have the home they were looking for.
Jarvis: "It feels like a home, it's something that we're proud of and created and it's been awesome."
The Remodeled Homes tour ran yesterday and today.
