(WDAY TV) -- There is new hope in the fight against Zebra Mussels. No mussels have been found on Rose Lake after the Minnesota DNR began chemical treatments last year.
For Cathy Scott, Rose Lake holds some of her fondest memories.
She grew up here, and years later, has moved back into her childhood home.
Scott: "Rose Lake is like coming home again. And, that probably was my goal for the last 40 years, was to be able to come back home."
When she heard a boatlift had carried Zebra Mussels into her beloved lake last summer, she was concerned.
Scott: "Your first reaction is, "Oh, no, not my Rose Lake!"
Now, she and other homeowners on Rose are breathing a sigh of relief.
Copper Sulfate treatments are showing signs of success.
The DNR started the treatments shortly after the Mussels were discovered, and that proactive response has stopped the invasive species from taking over.
No mussels have been found on the lake since.
Tim Giuliani: "Zebra Mussels are a big problem in a lot of places. And this is, in my view, a pristine lake."
The work that the DNR is doing with these chemical treatments is groundbreaking. Zebra Mussels have never been stopped on a lake before, and only Rose Lake and Lake Irene in Douglas county are seeing results now.
Scott: "They caught it in its very very early stages, and that's what you hope for."
Now, they are making sure the mussels really are gone.
And hoping that this treatment could be another tool to protect local waters.
