Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Four North Fargo residents now know why having "working" smoke detectors is so important. That being just one of several fires around town in the last 24 hours.
When firefighters got to this house in North Fargo around 2 a.m., there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the house. A passerby actually called the fire in - there were no working smoke detectors inside.
Investigators found charcoal inside a gas grill on the back porch - they think that is what caused the fire.
Flames burned up the exterior wall and entered the attic, causing 50-thousand dollars in damage.
Four renters living there were inside while the fire burned, but got out safely.
Cpt. Joe Mangin/Fargo Fire Dept.: "Smoke detectors in the house are critical. They can give you the early warning. In this case, if a passerby hadn't been walking down the street, that fire would have been well advanced into the structure before they'd have ever known it."
Another house fire in South Fargo was caused by a cigarette discarded in a flower pot.
Mangin: "Potting soil is not dirt, it's very flammable. Cigarettes being put into potting soil on decks has been the cause of numerous fires this year."
The homeowner put that fire out with a garden hose, and no one was injured.
