Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV)-- 40 years - that's how long North Dakota has been helping people with disabilities shine.

As part of Special Olympics North Dakota's Anniversary, about 400 participants competed in a tournament. People from nine communities throughout the state kicked soccer and boche balls around in Grand Forks.

Organizers say that the event is good for the athletes and the community.

Kathy Meagher, with the Special Olympics of North Dakota, says, "We're the same with our without disability so the volunteerism and the youth leadership is equally important to Special Olympics."

High School Soccer teams in Grand Forks and the UND soccer team helped out with the party today.
