(WDAY TV) -- The young son of a Clay County deputy, who was fired in July, is recovering after their dog, a retired police dog, attacked a 4 year old.

Ryan Carey is appealing his termination. He was fired nearly 2 months ago.

Sheriff Bill Bergquist says he can't discuss the issue publically.

Carey took ownership of the German shepherd, named Cuda, on the same day as his firing. Auhtorities say the boy was throwing a plastic-bottle toy for Cuda at their rural Hawley home. But when he went to hug Cuda, the dog attacked.

The boy suffered a puncture wound to his left temple area, and a large piece of his scalp is missing on the left side of his head. His right nostril also was injured. He's scheduled to be transported to a children's hospital in the Twin Cities for surgery. He's expected to recover.

Carey says he's trying to find a law enforcement agency to take the dog. Because of the incident, he must now register and insure Cuda as a "dangerous dog."
