Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The Schlossman YMCA hopes to re-open tomorrow after closing its doors for the day following a water main break.
The break flooded much of the basement, and sent many parents scrambling for replacement childcare.
Gym-goers and parents of daycare children at the Schlossman YMCA were out of luck for the day, as staff cleaned up a water main break.
Around 4 a.m., an 8-inch fire line pipe sent water gushing into the basement.
Paul Finstad, YMCA President: “Our staff and also the associated workers have just done a really great job in a short period of time of first of all, stopping the problem and then secondly, starting the clean-up process. So, it's one of those things that sometimes you need to deal with.”
About half of the lower level sat under three inches of water by the time crews stopped the flow.
The most affected areas were the hallways, one locker room, and the school age learning center.
With the daycare center closed, about 80 families had to find last-minute arrangements for childcare. The YMCA at Calvary took on about 15 extra kids.
Tara Wateland, YMCA at Calvary Site Director: “We have the room and space and the ability to help them get through this.”
They adjusted for the extra meals and new faces.
The West Fargo YMCA Early Learning Center also took on several more children.
Wateland: “The YMCA is just a family organization, so for us it was really easy just to open our doors to our current families and embrace them to come and do whatever we could to help them.”
A lot of parents chose to take the day off, or go in late to work.
