WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota entrepreneur who has traveled to Kazakhstan dozens of times in the past two decades has been named the upper Midwest's honorary consul to the former Soviet republic.

A ceremony was scheduled Tuesday in West Fargo for Kazakhstan's ambassador to the U.S. to formally bestow the honor on Howard Dahl.

Dahl is a grandson of E.G. Melroe, who founded Melroe Co., developer of the Bobcat loader. He currently is president and CEO of Amity Technology in Fargo.

Kazakhstan already is a big market for North Dakota products including farm equipment and cattle. The Forum newspaper reports that Dahl will work to increase those ties as Kazakhstan's economy, standard of living and agricultural production continue to improve.
