Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- The unmanned aircraft is a valuable feature in our countries arsenal, but flying them safely is challenging.

To lessen that challenge UND and NDSU partnered with NASA, working on an automatic sense and avoid system for the aircrafts.

Coming up on September 20th, a demonstration of the on-board technologies.

Mark Askelson with the Dept. of Atmospheric Sciences says, "We're doing this work so we can test it, gather real data about the viability of this approach so that we can inform decision makers so that they can make informed decisions down the road regarding unmanned aircraft and integration in the national airspace."

The test flight will maneuver by using Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast data.
