(WDAY TV) -- Minnesota will soon open its first gray wolf hunt since the animal came off the endangered species list.

And it's not welcomed by everyone. About 35 protesters gathered in Duluth,

holding signs and sometimes howling.

This group, Howling for Wolves, filed a petition with the D-N-R recently to stop the hunt. Those protesting in Duluth say the state is catering to a small minority of hunters while most Minnesotans want to continue protection for the wolf.

The state received more than 23-thousand applications for the 6-thousand permits for wolf hunting. Opponents are asking the Governor to stop the hunt.
