Detour at ND state park to remain another year

CAVALIER, N.D. (AP) — A detour route at Icelandic State Park in northeastern North Dakota will remain in place for one more year.

CAVALIER, N.D. (AP) — A detour route at Icelandic State Park in northeastern North Dakota will remain in place for one more year.

The state Parks and Recreation Department says the five-mile detour with three miles of gravel road is necessary because of upgrades to the Renwick Dam on the Tongue River. The dam work is scheduled to resume next May, and officials say the detour will remain in place until officials determine use of the road across the dam won't hamper construction.

The detour takes tourists to campground and beach areas. Nearly 8,000 campers used the road through August. Parks and Rec says it has invested more than $16,000 in upkeep of the road.
