Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- The Moorhead Fire Department is looking into a rash of dumpster fires.

Over the last several weeks there have been about 7 dumpster fires. They are all happening near the 1100 block of 18th street south by the MSUM Campus.

Fire Chief Rich Duysen says this is a crime and anyone caught doing this could face arson charges. He also says these fires could start small, but end up dangerous.

Rich Duysen, Chief for the Moorhead Fire Dept., says, "the lids are made out of plastic now so there's a lot of toxic smoke that comes off of those, and we don't always know what's in the dumpsters when they're burning either, so if there's plastics or anything burning and people are going by and they breath in some of those fumes too, it's not a healthy situation."

Anyone who knows anything about theses fires is asked to call local law enforcement.
