Cell phone bacteria could be worse than you thought

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- A new study might make you think about wiping down your cell phone before making that next call. It shows a toilet seat has fewer germs than a typical phone. In fact while most of us try and touch as little as possible in a bathroom, you might be surprised what items in your world hold the most bacteria.

A phone has more bacteria on it than a toilet, but where do doctors say the worst place to mess with that phone is, right here.

Dr. Augusto Alonto/Sanford: "People don't wash their cell phone after we got to the bathroom when we use them in the bathroom."

The study found there were up to 10 times the amount of bugs which can cause nausea and stomach problems on that phone than the lavatory.

Dr. Augusto Alonto from Sanford says a phone can quickly get germ build up because its in contact with our our dirtiest places - our hands and mouth.

Alonto: "when we talk about going to the bathroom and getting germs from the bathroom there's a lot of intestinal bacteria that can get there."

And the reason these phones are so much dirtier than a toilet, this thing often gets cleaned more than your phone, so what's on the phone grows and grows.

Before you use that as an excuse to not return a call, Dr. Alonto reminds us our bodies are very resilient.

Alonto: "Most of the bacteria we see on cell phones are just hanging out on the cell phone as long as we don't lick the cell phone or anything like that we'll be ok."

Take a look at this list titled "The 10 germiest Places in Your World."

You tip toe around the bathroom, but most of us don't think twice about grabbing these items or stepping in these places.

Dr. Alonto says the thing to take away from this if it's something you use often, clean it often.
