(WDAY TV) -- Just 2-months away from the November election, an Independent write-in candidate has thrown his name into the U.S. Senate race.

Bill Kiefer, a businessman from Fargo, will run against Democrat Heidi Heitkamp and Republican Rick Berg for the seat vacated by Kent Conrad.

Kiefer says he waited until now to enter the race because he supports a 60-day limit on elections so candidates are not constantly running for re-election.

He also says if elected, he would forfeit retirement benefits at the end of his term , if his approval rating does not exceed 50-percent.

Kiefer says, "i'd like to be a statesman, I hope, if I get elected. I don't want to be a politician. Because the connotation of politician is not a good one, in my opinion, in today's society."

Kiefer will spend the next two months meeting with people throughout the state.
