Harwood, ND (WDAY TV) -- What a way to end the school day.

At Harwood Elementary today, 2nd grader Esmae Simonson got the surprise of the day, when he dad walked in after being deployed on an overseas medical mission.

Lieutenant Commander Todd Simonson, a registered nurse, has spent the last several months on board the Navy's medical ship: "USS-mercy." The floating hospital helped hundreds of patients in Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia.

Minutes after he landed in Fargo, he headed for Harwood Elementary to give a welcome hug to his daughter.

Lt. Commander Todd Simonson says, "worked out pretty good I had a lot of traveling today from Hawaii but everything worked out great and glad we were able to surprise our daughter in class."

As part of the military medical mission, Todd and the others on the deployment did 900-surgeries.
