Xcel Energy says one of the most important things you can do, make sure your furnace is serviced, and that the filter is clean. If this gets dirty, it'll make your furnace work harder, costing you more money.

Those filters should be checked over once a month in the winter. Turning down the thermostat helps too.

Xcel Energy says lowering the temp 5 degrees can save you more than 70 dollars a year. In addition, it's time to start caulking, weather stripping, and putting plastic over areas where air leaks through.

Terry Thorestensen/Xcel Energy: "If you kinda just let it go, one, they'll spend more money on that because if you use less energy, you pay less."

Xcel says it can cost money, to save money, but in the end, renters and homeowners can end up with a lot more cash. Also, keeping your water heater at 120 degrees can cut costs. Crews from Xcel can come check your home for 30 dollars, pointing out how to be more energy efficient.
