Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - Brother combinations are nothing new for Concordia football. They've had several over the years. But for the Baune brothers, it's an experience they're hoping to share...for the very first time.
Despite growing up together and attending Fargo South, Brett and Jon Baune had never been on the same team in any sport. That's because they're 4 years apart. But this season, it's finally happened. Brett is a senior fullback. And younger brother Jon made the Concordia varsity as a freshman, and is listed as a 3rd string receiver.
Jon Baune – Concordia Freshman WR: “The last two years we've been talking about ‘what would it be like if we played in an actual football game together?’ It's finally coming true. It'll be a special year. I've been looking forward to this. It's gonna be awesome.”
Brett Baune - Concordia Senior FB: “Once I see him on the game field, see him perform, that'll be the most fun.”
Brett, a Cobber captain, admits he might've been harder on his younger brother than the coaches this offseason.
Jon Baune: “He's always pushing me, get in the weight room, get better. I knew this is the only chance we'll have to play together...So if I don't do my part now, there isn't a chance to have that.”
Bret scored 16 Td's last year. With 12 this year, he'll be the career touchdown leader at Concordia, passing his head coach, Terry Horan. Horan feels like the younger Baune can have just as big an impact on Cobber football by the time his career is through.
Terry Horan – 27th Year as Cobber Head Coach: “I see great signs already as a freshman. He's gonna be there and has all the makings of a great one.”
Jon and Brett plan to cherish this special year at Concordia, and so will their family. Their older brother and dad were also Cobbers.
The Baune's and Concordia are off to a good start after saturday's season opening win over Jamestown College.
